Simple ! Either way the rushed release of stress hormones into the body would greatly enhance the ability to fight or run.
Nowadays though our perceived threats and challenges are far less tangible. Issues related to Self esteem, competitiveness, fear of failure, relationships etc. all play a part.
Literally if we are not performing well our ‘stress’ responses may mean we react physically when we feel psychologically threatened.
On the other hand, we are told that some stress is good or even necessary for us to perform well - this is where the picture gets blurred. There are some key points however on which the ‘experts’ all seem to be agreed:
-
Most of us need some stress to stimulate and help us to perform better
- Many of us would be bored with absolutely no ‘pressure’ in our lives.
- Some of us thrive on stress to help us realise our full potential.
- We all need to know the difference between ‘good pressure’ (healthy) and ‘bad pressure’(stress).

How do I know if I have it and if I
have what can, I do?
According to Psychologists:
STRESS = PRESSURE OVER ABILITY TO COPE
However, Perception is reality so shouldn't we say
STRESS + PERCEIVED PRESSURE OVER
PERCEIVED ABILITY TO COPE? |

EXAMINE YOUSELF.
When we are Underperforming, we might:
Be lethargic or even bored, lacking in focus, find it difficult to concentrate and can’t wait for the 'Weekend’.
When we are at our peak performance: we are exhilarated, thinking is sharp and clear we are' buzzing' and wonder how time has flown.
When we are ‘stressed’ concentration becomes difficult, our ability to articulate and remember things will be affected-things appear to be beyond our control and it seems like we have to face the whole world alone! |
